Remembering Princess Diana

Princess Diana - contemplative
I just read that Elton John’s concert are on sale in Kuala Lumpur on 22nd November 2011. As usual, they have instructions asking people not to bring any recording devices and so on. Slowly it dawn upon me, that he was the one who sang at Princess Diana’s funeral.

I remember Elton John singing his tribute at Princess Diana’s funeral. It seems like so long ago but at the same time it only seems like yesterday.

I still recall the day on that day in 1997 when my neighbor, his voice fraught with distress and tears, announced that Princess Diana was dead. She had been killed in an accident. I was wondering why my neighbor would be so upset about the incident.

I briefly remember that Princes Charles and Princess Diana were married in 1991 in the “Wedding of the Century” and she was only 20 years. It was a fairy tale marriage and it was meant to last forever but was not meant to be.

Elton John’s funeral song for Princess Diana “Candle in the Wind” was so hauntingly beautiful, with the lyrics, “Goodbye England’s Rose…..The Joy you brought us through the years”.

Princess Diana's death and tribute
A million tears must have fallen with grieve and sorrow that day. With the million flowers and bouquets from common people in remembrance  of the “people’s princess”. If I am not mistaken, she used to say “Call me Diana, not Princess Diana” which showed her closeness to the ordinary people.

Princess Diana social causes
Her legacy to her causes like AIDS and anti-land mines showed her concern over issues  that have devastated the common people of developing countries.

In the moving funeral service of Princess Diana, we see her beloved sons, William and Henry, holding desperately back the tears in a tribute to their mother, the people’s princess. The outpouring of love from all walks of life from citizens of the world was unprecedented.

Coincidentally Mother Theresa also passed away a few days after Princess Diana’s departure. I remember my sister was feeling a bit melancholy about the loss of Princess Diana and Mother Theresa and someone told her that “God must be glad now that her two favorite daughters are back with Him”.
