HOT TRENDS

Hot Trends are based on Google Trends.  Google Trends shows the latest and most popular trends/articles of interest on any particular day.  At this particular time, Google Hot Trends only show Hot Trends in USA.  Here I will probably be only capturing the top 2 hot trends per day.  Apart from it being interesting to know what are today's hot trends, I have found that it is a good way to learn something new each day.  Often the hot trends feature a name or item that I have never heard of.

Addendum: 02 Dec 2011
I have decided to add the top news item from Yahoo Trending Now (AU).  You would think that Google's Hot Trends and Yahoo's Trending Now would show the same top results, and while there is some overlap, they do not.  Hence picking the top news from both seems like a good idea to me.

So why don't you join me with these Hot Trends.  I will write a bit about each - usually the top one or two daily hot trends.  It will usually be very succinct because who has time to jump from page to page, reading a whole lot of data.  I will also provide some links, where appropriate, to articles on the hot trends for those of you who might want more information on any current hot trend.

(Easiest way to keep up-to-date with the hottest news on the internet.  Just click on link above, confirm, and we will send you an email with the very latest news.)

John Lennon

John Lennon
John Lennon is No.4 in Yahoo's Trending Now (AU).  The others (with the first being "Cricket live scores") is just so boring (to me) that I have skipped immediately to John Lennon.

Dec 8, 2011 marks the 31st anniversary of the death of John Lennon. On Dec 8, 1980, Mark Chapman shot and killed John Lennon outside Lennon's New York apartment.

His Beatles bandmate and drummer, Ringo Starr unveiled his psychedelic design for the Non Violence Foundation's "knotted gun" symbol.  Ringo Starr marked John Lennon's anniversary by called by tougher gun sentences.

The campus of Virginia Teh, in Blacksburg, Va was the scene of the worst shooting in US history. It  took place in 2007 and  32 people were killed.

On Dec 8, 2011 a Virginia Tech police officer, 39 year old Deriek Crouse was killed on the campus parking lot by a gunman.  Motive is currently unknown and gunman is still at large.

World AIDS Day 2011

posted 1 Dec 2011 19:13 by Helena Asmus Lim   [ updated 1 Dec 2011 19:14 ]

World AIDS Day

December 1 is World AIDS Day.

World AIDS Day was first declared in 1988 by the World Health Organization (WHO).
World AIDS awareness week is from 24 November - 1 December.
2011 is the 20th anniversary of the first public wearing of the red ribbon.  It was first publicly worn by Jeremy Irons at the Tony Awards 1991.

"World AIDS Day" is No. 1 searched phrase at Yahoo's Trending Now.

World AIDS Day 2011

The World AIDS Day theme for this year is "Getting to Zero" with focus on:
"Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths."

Coincidentally I caught a Bono interview on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. During and after the interview I was thinking to myself what an absolutely great guy, great humanitarian Bono is.  And he is even a hunk.  And I was thinking to myself I would like to write up a bit about what he was talking about - which is Word AIDS Day.

And maybe it is no coincidence after all that today I found Yahoo's Trending Now and on it as top search phrase is World AIDS Day.

I was going to write about Bono but I think learning (personally speaking) some awareness facts on AIDS would even be better.  Hope you will share with me ..

Bono on World AIDS Day

What can we do?

Wear a red ribbon to raise awareness.  Check out some simple helpful facts on AIDS and pass them along.

Simple Facts on AIDS

  • Red Ribbon is the HIV and AIDS awareness ribbon.  The red ribbon is the international symbol, can be worn anyday, esp on World AIDS Day.
  • Singer-songwriter Freddie Mercury dies of AIDS in 1991. His death has a huge impact on HIV & AIDS awareness.
  • HIV is a virus.  It causes AIDS.  HIV virus damages the immune system.  Someone is said to have AIDS if they develop HIV-related illnesses.
  • You cannot get HIV/AIDS from sharing cups, cutlery, towels, toilet seats, etc.
  • Antiretroviral (ARV) drugs help to prevent the progression from HIV to AIDS.  They have to be taken every day for the rest of a person's life.
  • It is believed that HIV evolved from SIV, a similar virus found in chimpanzees and crossed species to humans.
  • PMTCT (Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission) strategies help to make it possible for a HIV positive mother to give birth to a HIV negative baby.
  • Good ole' Texa, USA!  Saliva cannot transmit HIV.  Despite this fact, Texas classifies saliva from a HIV infected person as a "deadly weapon"!
  • Switzerland, as part of a reduction programme, provide clean needles and syringes to prisoners in jail.  Access to them helps reduct HIV infection among drug users.
On this World AIDS Day 2011 I learnt some new facts about AIDS that I did not know before.  I hope this has helped you or someone you love in some way as well

Daniel Day Lewis is stupendous!  I first saw him in My Left Foot (1989) and I have been mesmerized with him ever since. He is one of the few rare actors who can transport you away from himself (Daniel Day Lewis) into the character he portrays.

Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln

Daniel Day Lewis as Lincoln

Daniel Day Lewis is making headlines today ("daniel day lewis" is No. 1 in Googles's Hot Searches (USA)) in large part for his upcoming role in Lincoln, a new Steven Spielberg film scheduled for release in late 2012.

Daniel Michael Blake Day-Lewis was born on 29 April 1957 and holds both Irish and British citizenship.

Daniel Day Lewis is reported to be a method actor who immerses himself into the role of his character, even off the set and it has been said, even to the point of adversely affecting his health.

He is also reportedly one of the most selective actors in the film industry: there has been as many as 5 years lull inbetween roles.

More interesting facts on Daniel Day Lewis

Daniel Day Lewis and Rebecca Miller
He had a minor role in Ghandi (1982) playing the character of a street thug and bully (Coliin).

In 1989 while working the the stage play Hamlet at the National Theatre, he collapsed in a scene where the ghost of Hamlet's father first appears to Hamlet.  It was rumoured that Daniel Day Lewis had seen the ghost of his father - a rumour he later confirmed.  He has not appeared on stage since.

In 1996, during the time when he was working on the film version of The Crucible (written by playwright Arthur Miller), he met his wife Rebecca Miller - the playwright's daughter.  (Arthur Miller was married to Marilyn Monroe in 1956; Marilyn's third and last marriage).

Woodworking and shoemaking are two of Daniel Day Lewis's passions.

Daniel Day Lewis's intensity and jaw-dropping ability to metamorphosize  into his roles is legendary.  I look forward to his role in the upcoming Lincoln - one of America's Greatest Presidents.

"mindy mccready" is the No. 1 hot topic on Hot Searches (USA) today.  Again this is another phrase/name that I go: huh?  So ..

Who is Mindy McCready?

Mindy McCready
Mindy McCready is an American country music singer.

Her albums include:
  • Ten Thousand Angel
  • If I Don't Stay the Night
  • I'm Not So Tough
  • I'm Still Here
Even  though her music career seems to have slowed down, she continues to receive quite a lot of media interest, more particularly with regards to her personal life than for her art.

You can find a record of her troubles, scandals, legal problems at Mindy McCready on wikipedia.

The latest media focus on Mindy McCready is that she has disappeared with her son Zander (aged 5).  Mindy only has visitation rights, not legal custody of Zander.

And apparently it has just been confirmed that Mindy McCready is also 5 months pregnant with twins. (source: eonline.com)

Below is her hit You'll Never Know.

It is not important that we know anymore about her troubled life.  Let's hope that Ten Thousand Angels are watching over Mindy McCready now.

Victoria Secret Fashion Show

victoria secret fashion show is the No. 2 hottest search phrase today at Hot Searches (USA).

This is probably of interest to both the male as well as the female general public, though I have read that it is more the former who goes a looking.

What is Victoria's Secret Fashion Show?

For one thing, it is not a secret!  The Victoria's Secret Fashion Show is an annual fashion show.  It is sponsored by (wait for it) ... Victoria's Secret. But why the over-whelming male interest?

Victoria's Secret specializes in lingerie and sleepwear.  Need I say more?

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show attract hundreds of celebrities and entertainers.  It is a lavish event that seems to be getting hotter and bigger each year.

A sneak peek at this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show can be seen at: Pics and Video of Victoria's Secret Fashion Show (at starpulse.com)

VS Fashion Show will air on CBS (America) on 29 November, 2011.  Taping was actually done on 9 November, 2011.

Sorry I can bring you more info today on Victoria's Secret Fashion Show - day is almost gone and I have servers that are down.

occupy la

posted 28 Nov 2011 18:34 by Helena Asmus Lim   [ updated 28 Nov 2011 18:34 ]

"occupy la" is the number 1 hottest search phrase (USA) according to Google Trends.  Now I ask you:

What is occupy la?

Of course, for many of you up-to-date news readers, that is just another question that shows my ignorance. (I don't read newspapers.)  But then again, people in the world outside of USA might be asking the very same question - and this is why I love Google Trends - learn something new every day! :)

So what is "occupy la"?  It stands for Occupy Los Angeles and is aligned to the other Occupy Movements organized by protestors.  There is even an Occupy Los Angeles Facebook page which at this moment, already has 43,517 "Likes".  The website of Occupy Los Angeles is at: www.occupylosangeles.org/

The Info found on their FB (Facebook) page reads as follows:
We are Occupy LA. We are in solidarity with Occupy Wall Street and the other occupations across the nation and the world. We are the 99% that demand a world that works through democracy, not corporatocracy. We deserve a representative government, and we will not be silent

The "Declaration" of Occupy Lost Angeleson the official website is a whole long list of grievances which ends off with this note:
*These grievances are not all-inclusive.

After reading both, I must say that I have still no clear idea what Occupy Los Angeles is all about.  The little that I can gather is that it is an assembly of people, gathering together, with (initial?) peaceful intentions to protest against their governing bodies over a whole slew of issues.  The protesters have labeled their movement "Direct Democracy".

cover of Occupied Los Angeles Times web edition

Current News on Occupy LA

Whether this started off with peaceful intentions and tolerance on both sides of the divide, it is now as it always seems to be - enmeshed in violence, claims and counter-claims of abuse.

Police in riot gear have been called out to deal with "anti-Wall Stree activitis in Los Angeles who defined a midnight deadline to vacate a camp outside City Hall.." (source: Police hold off on eviction of Los Angeles Occupy camp, Reuters, 28 Nov 2011)

Personal Comment on the Occupy Movements

From the little that I can gather about this movement which has replicated from the Occupy Wall Street movement, the basis of their grievances is that the upper crust of America, comprising of supposedly of 1% of the population - take in about 25% of the nation's income.  And that they have abused their power, at the expense of the 99% of the nation, in their unceasing pursuit of greed and self-interest.

I don't know enough about this movement to form any definitive opinion but I do resonate to their plight and as any sensible person on the globe at the moment would feel - that something needs to be done as the imbalances in so many areas (climate, ecology, economy, etc.) are beginning to tip us over in more ways than one.  And this is a global issue, not just an American one.

Cyber Monday Deals 2011

posted 28 Nov 2011 17:50 by Helena Asmus Lim   [ updated 28 Nov 2011 17:51 ]

Cyber Monday
"Cyber Monday Deals 2011" is the second hottest search in Hot Searchs (USA) today. But ..

What is Cyber Monday?

Thanksgiving Day is the 4th Thursday each November and is an occasion mostly celebrated in America.  I did ask the question What is Thanksgiving a few days ago and now I realize that Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday are all related.

Black Friday, as I mentioned yesterday, is the day after Thanksgiving and is a massive sale day for retailers - especially of the brick and mortar kind.

Now I discover that Cyber Monday is the Monday immediately following Black Friday and Cyber Monday is the equivalent of what Black Friday is to off-line retailers.  Cyber Monday is when online internet sales are expected to soar.

Origins of Cyber Monday

According to wikipedia.org, "Cyber Monday" made its debut in November 2005 - so it is a relatively new concept; which does not mean it is not huge.  Cyber Monday" was a term created by companies to persuade people to shop online.

Cyber Monday as an online shopping phenomenon continues to grow.  It has spread internationally (how could it not given the nature of the ubiquitous internet) and according to comStore, Inc. (USA), the Cyber Monday Online Sales for 2010 was over US$1,000 MILLION.

Any small online seller who is in the know (unlike me :( ) would be in on this Cyber Monday phenomenon.  Huge companies have and continue to lead the way including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Dell, Best Buy, Staples, Verison, and many more.

For shoppers, this is a bonanza because deals abound everywhere.  And you don't even need to get off your butt and get trampled in the rush (unlike Black Friday shopping) to find a deal.  However, with the proliferation of deals everywhere, finding the right deal for you might be more of an issue.

Good Luck on your online Cyber Monday shopping spree.

Matt Leinart, NFL (National Football League) football player is today's No. 1 hottest news on Google Trends (USA).  But why?

Matt Leinart, NFL football player
According to Los Angeles Times (latimes.com) - Matt Leinart's luck this year has been consistently bad.  And now he has suffered a collarbone injury that might end his season.

OK, I am no football fan.  In fact, I am hard pressed to even say what NFL meant before this article.  I must say that Matt Leinart is one handsome boy.

And I am sure that his name is well known to NFL/football lovers.  So find out about Matt Leinart at wikipedia.
